The initial free practice session from the Sepang circuit in Malaysia has seen Lewis Hamilton top the tables in the McLaren. Following on from Jenson Button’s win in Australia last weekend, the MP4-25 appears to be running well, and the 2008 world champion edged out Mercedes pilot Nico Rosberg and his team mate. Michael Schumacher continued the sequence by going fourth fastest while Robert Kubica popped into fifth, underlining his performance in Australia.
Fairuz Fauzy debuted in the Lotus, substituting Heikki Kovalainen and giving the team a chance to allow their reserve driver some practice in front of his home crowd. Paul Di Resta also managed to complete some laps in the Force India, replacing Vitantonio Liuzzi for the morning session. Both drivers did well with Di Resta hauling his car into P15 and 0.9s down on team mate Adrian Sutil. Fauzy also put in a respectable performance, completing nineteen laps to go P22 and 1.3s shy of Jarno Trulli’s pace.
